Preventive maintenance is the cheapest repair a truck owner will ever pay for. A diesel that gets regular service lasts longer, burns less fuel and is much less likely to break down on the highway. This checklist covers the basics every owner-operator and small fleet should stay on top of.
Oil and filters
Clean oil is the lifeblood of a diesel engine. Change the oil and oil filter on schedule for your engine and duty cycle, and replace fuel and air filters as recommended. Dirty fuel filters starve the injectors, and a clogged air filter robs power and raises fuel use.
Coolant and fluids
Overheating is one of the fastest ways to damage a diesel engine, especially in East Texas summers. Check coolant level and condition regularly, and inspect hoses and the radiator for leaks. Keep an eye on transmission, differential and power steering fluids too.
Brakes and tires
- Inspect air brake components and listen for air leaks
- Check brake adjustment and lining wear
- Look over tires for uneven wear, cuts and correct pressure
Belts, hoses and electrical
Cracked belts and soft hoses fail without much warning. Batteries, cables and lighting should also be checked, since a weak electrical system causes hard starts and roadside headaches.
Grease and lubrication
Suspension, steering and driveline components need regular grease. Skipping it leads to worn bushings, U-joints and kingpins.
Keep records
Track every service with the date and mileage. Good records help you plan repairs, protect resale value and spot patterns early.
